About Sheriff Sam Houston
Sheriff Sam Houston
Sheriff Sam Houston is a lifelong public servant whose career reflects dedication, leadership, and an unwavering commitment to the people of Texas.
A 1973 graduate of New Caney High School, Sheriff Houston began his service to our nation by enlisting in the United States Army. From 1973 to 1976, he proudly served as a Communication Specialist and was honorably discharged in October 1976. Following his military service, he returned home to work alongside his family at Houston’s Grocery, where he learned the value of hard work, integrity, and community relationships.
Sheriff Houston answered a greater call to serve when he joined the Houston Fire Department. After graduating from the fire academy and becoming a certified Houston firefighter, he steadily rose through the ranks to the position of Chauffeur, serving in a command driving role. He also became a certified paramedic, touching countless lives through emergency response and compassionate care. Sheriff Houston retired in 2006 from Station 103 in Kingwood after nearly 29 years of dedicated service to the City of Houston, Harris County, and its citizens.
His law enforcement career began in 1981 when he earned his Basic Reserve Certification from the University of Houston–Downtown Police Academy. In 1986, he furthered his training at the Clint Peoples Montgomery County Sheriff’s Academy, where he obtained his Advanced Reserve certification, and finally his Basic Peace Officer License, which he later advanced to earn his Master Peace Officer certification through the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE), the highest professional achievement in Texas law enforcement standards.
He began his law enforcement service as a Reserve Deputy with Harris County Precinct 4, where he served for approximately one year before transferring to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office. There, he dedicated about five years to the Reserve Patrol Division, faithfully serving the citizens of East Montgomery County while continuing to expand his knowledge, training, leadership skills, and overall experience in law enforcement.
In 2012, Sheriff Houston was elected Constable for Precinct 3 in San Jacinto County. For the next 12 years, he proudly served the citizens of Precinct 3 with integrity, accountability, and strong leadership.
In January 2025, Sheriff Houston was elected Sheriff of San Jacinto County and took office on January 1, 2025. Since that time, he remains committed to strengthening the Sheriff’s Office, supporting his deputies, and serving the community with professionalism and a servant’s heart.
A resident of San Jacinto County since 2006, Sheriff Houston is proud to call this community home. He is also a member in good standing of the Sam B. Crawford Masonic Lodge in New Caney, Texas.
Sheriff Sam Houston’s life has been defined by service — to his country, his community, and the citizens he is honored to protect.
